Police interrogate Maulana Samiul Haq s personal staff

RAWALPINDI – The personal secretary and guard of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam’s slain leader Maulana Samiul Haq was interrogated for three hours on Saturday in connection with the assassination of the cleric.

Maulana Sami, who was dubbed as the ‘father of Taliban’ was stabbed to death by unknown assailants at his residence in Rawalpindi on Friday – at a time when his personal staff was not at home.

According to police sources, the staff members were interrogated by police but both were later let go on the directions of Maulana’s Sami’s son, Maulana Hamidul Haq though the duo can be summoned again for further probe.

Meanwhile, a first information report (FIR) of Maulana Sami’s assassination was registered against unknown gunmen at the Airport Police Station on his son’s complaint.

According to the FIR, Maulana Hamid said his father’s secretary, Ahmed Shah, had informed him over the phone that someone had stabbed his father.

The FIR stated that Maulana Sami was rushed to the Safari Hospital but succumbed to the injuries as he received a total of 12 wounds on his stomach, heart, forehead and ears.

Hamidul Haq said that he did not want to have a post-mortem examination as it was “against Islamic law”.

The 82-year-old Maulana Samiul Haq was a religious scholar and former Senator. He was the member of the Senate of Pakistan from 1985 to 1991 and again from 1991 to 1997.

He was regarded as “Father of the Taliban” and had close ties to Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

Samiul Haq was currently the chancellor of Darul Uloom Haqqania, a Deobandi Islamic seminary which is the alma mater of many prominent Taliban members; Haq served as chairman of the Difa-e-Pakistan Council and was the leader of his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam political party, known as JUI-S.

His party has been an ally of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The PTI also gave him a ticket for the 2018 Senate election, but he could not be elected to the upper house.

The JUI-S chief headed a committee formed for peace talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in 2014.

His funeral prayers would be held on Saturday at 3 pm at Khauskhal Khan college’s ground following which he will be buried at his seminary Darul Uloom Haqqania.
