ISLAMABAD – Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif appeared before the accountability court in Islamabad on Monday in the Flagship reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
NAB court judge Arshad Malik is hearing the reference filed in line with the directives of the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.
Nawaz’s counsel, Khawaja Haris resumed cross-examination of Wajid Zia, the star witness of prosecution, who also headed the six-men Joint Investigation Team (JIT) constituted by the apex court.
In his statement, Wajiz Zia detailed that Nawaz Sharif did not pay any tax during 2001-08 for which the former premier had clarified that he was not in the country in the said duration.
As many as three references have been filed against the former premier in line with the directives of the supreme court in the Panama Papers case verdict.
The elder Sharif was sentenced to ten years in prison by the accountability court judge Muhammad Bashir, in the Avenfield reference, however, the conviction was suspended by a two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court.
Besides Flagship reference, another reference regarding the Al-Azizia steel mills has also been filed by the accountability watchdog against the members of the former ruling family including Nawaz Sharif.
