The man who denied admission to his own son at IBA, Dr Abdul Wahab, passes away

KARACHI – Losing the years-long fight against cancer, renowned educationist Professor Dr Abdul Wahab has passed away in Karachi, the hospital spokesman said on Tuesday.

On Monday, Wahab was rushed to a private hospital in a critical condition where he was put on a ventilator for machine-assisted breathing.

During his decades-long educational career, Dr Abdul Wahab served as Vice Chancellor of the Karachi University. He also remained appointed as Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Director and President of the Muhammad Ali Jinnah University (MAJU).

In his book titled “Sarkari Idaroun Ki Islah,” Abdul Wahab penned two incidents from his career which became famous later on.

About the first incident, he described the happenings of the night when he himself denied his own son an admission to the IBA, because he failed to meet the merit.

“I wept that night because I had rejected admission of my own son. He had obtained a few marks less than the merit, but the principles must not be compromised,” he wrote in the book.

While mentioning another incident, the professor wrote: “Once, I received a letter from former President General Ziaul Haq, in which he had asked to grant admission to a Bahawalpur boy without any obligation. I met the boy, he seemed a weak student and I inferred that he would not stay long at the IBA. So, I asked officials to allow the boy to live in the hostel but not to enroll him as a student. After some days, the boy came to me, and told me he was leaving. He was unable to comprehend the courses taught at the IBA.”
