ISLAMABAD – Former minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Azam Swati was apprehended by federal cops amid protests in twin cities.
Swati, 68, was taken to Sangjani police station before being transferred to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) center.
As reasons for Swati’s arrest remain undisclosed, his detention intensified heightened political tensions. PTI is currently facing increased scrutiny and actions from law enforcement agencies targeting its leadership.
In light of arrest, Khan’s party expressed serious concerns about the treatment of its leaders, highlighting troubling trend of rising arrests among key party figures. The political landscape in Pakistan continues to evolve as these events unfold, drawing attention from both supporters and critics alike.
Islamabad police lodged dozen of cases, leading to the arrest of nearly one thousands supporters of Imran Khan, including about 20 law enforcement perssonel from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, after two days of clashes during protests at D-Chowk.
Most protests calmed, although some gatherings were dispersed by police, resulting in over 45 additional arrests. Islamabad police chief Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi reported 878 detainees, including 120 Afghan nationals, with many facing various charges, including terrorism.
In Rawalpindi, additional cases were filed, and about 150 protesters were arrested, with police citing violent confrontations. Attock police also arrested 11 KP police officials and confiscated vehicles used in the protests, including ambulances and rescue service equipment.
