Navy Day celebrates heroic Operation ‘SOMNATH’, 1965 war bravery

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Navy Day is being celebrated today on September 8, to honor brave heroes of the 1965 war who fought gallantly against much bigger adversaries.

Navy Day marks Operation ‘SOMNATH’ during the second India–Pakistan war where warships inflicted heavy damage on Indian shore installations, and the submarine GHAZI dominated the seas. Nation praised the courage of naval officers and honored the sacrifices of martyrs and war heroes.

Navy day featured prayers, flag-raising ceremonies, tributes to martyrs, a wreath-laying at Mazar-e-Quaid, and other activities to mark the day when Pak Navy warships launched decisive attacks on key enemy shore installations, dealing significant damage to Indian defenses.

Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf calls this day a defining moment in naval history, celebrating the unwavering resolve and courage of Navy personnel who executed their operations with exceptional skill.

Operation ‘SOMNATH’ remains particularly notable for its bold surprise attack by  fleet of seven warships on the Indian port of Dwarka. This mission inflicted considerable damage on vital installations, including a radar station, demonstrating the Navy’s professionalism and strategic capability.

During war, submarine PNS/M Ghazi became symbol of country’s naval strength, serving a powerful deterrent and showcasing the country’s operational superiority against potential threats.
