Supreme Court extends deadline to wrap up pending graft references against Sharifs

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court has granted six weeks to the accountability court in Islamabad to wind up two of the pending references filed against the Sharif family.

The accountability court judge had sought four weeks time to complete the hearings on Flagship investment and Al-Azizia reference, however, the top court granted two more weeks to the judge on Tuesday.

The deadline to wrap up the references filed by the National Accountability Bureau had expired on July 9th, a month after the top court granted the third extension.

The apex court has also granted six weeks to conclude the reference filed against the former finance minister, Ishaq Dar, pertaining to assets beyond means.

As many as three references had been filed against the former ruling family – Avenfield, offshore firms and Al-Azizia – in line with the directives of the apex court in the Panama Papers case.

The Avenfiled reference has been concluded with the judge Muhammad Bashir announcing prison sentence to former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar.

Nawaz Sharif and his sons Hussain and Hasan are accused in all three references whereas his daughter Maryam and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar are named in the Avenfield reference only.

Hussain and Hassan Nawaz are UK-based and have been absconding since the proceedings began last year, however, the former premier turned up regularly before the accountability court.
