Maulana Samiul Haq s secretary goes missing as murder probe continues

RAWALPINDI -The secretary of slain Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam-Sami (JUI-S) leader Maulana Samiul Haq has been missing from his house in Akora Khattak for the last three or four days.

According to the claims made by his family, Syed Ahmed Shah was picked up by the law enforcement agencies, however, police deny having him in their custody.

Mr Shah is believed to have discovered Maulana Samiul Haq’s body after he was stabbed to death on Nov 2 and was also the first to inform Maulana Hamidul Haq Haqqani, the son of Maulana Samiul Haq, of his father’s death.

Maulana Hamid told a leading daily that Mr Shah had been missing for the last three or four days, adding that his phone has also been switched off.

Mr Shah may have either gone into hiding himself or may have been taken by the law enforcement or intelligence agencies in connection with the investigation into the JUI-S leader’s murder, Maulana Hamid added.

He said Syed Ahmed Shah was in Akora Khattak before he went missing and had locked the door from outside and had found it open upon returning when Maulana Sami was murdered.

‘No one has stopped the police from investigating Ahmed Shah or anyone else they wanted. We had no enmity with anyone but people from the outside or inside could be involved in the murder,’ Maulana Hamid told Dawn News.

The 82-year-old Maulana Samiul Haq was a religious scholar and former Senator. He was the member of the Senate of Pakistan from 1985 to 1991 and again from 1991 to 1997 and was branded as “Father of the Taliban”.

Samiul Haq was currently the chancellor of Darul Uloom Haqqania, a Deobandi Islamic seminary which is the alma mater of many prominent Taliban members; Haq served as chairman of the Difa-e-Pakistan Council and was the leader of his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam political party, known as JUI-S.

His party has been an ally of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The PTI also gave him a ticket for the 2018 Senate election, but he could not be elected to the upper house.

The JUI-S chief headed a committee formed for peace talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in 2014.
