SC accepts NAB appeal against bail to Shehbaz Sharif, Fawad Hassan Fawad

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Thursday accepted for hearing the National Accountability Bureau’s plea challenging a Lahore High Court decision to grant bail to Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and former principal secretary to PM Fawad Hassan Fawad in the Ashiana Housing Scheme case.

A three-member bench led by Justice Azmat Saeed heard the appeal, submitted by NAB counsel Naeem Bukhari, the Radio Pakistan reported.

The court issued notices to Shahbaz Sharif and Fawad Hassan Fawad and adjourned the hearing till second of the next month.

NAB has filed a corruption reference against Fawad and others over their alleged involvement in the scam.

The anti-corruption watchdog had also arrested the Pakistan Muslim League-N president in connection with the housing scam.

The Bureau has alleged that the Rs14 billion contract for the housing scheme was won by a construction company called Chaudhry Latif and Sons, but the then Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and his aides had awarded it to “ineligible” Lahore Casa Developers.

Due to the alleged illegal cancellation of the contract, the government had to pay damages to the contractor. The cancellation of the contract had also delayed the project, resulting in a cost escalation of billions of rupees.
