Senate polls: Constitutional amend on the cards to stop horse-trading

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – In a significant move to stop horse-trading in the upcoming Senate elections, the federal government has decided to amend the Constitution, a local television reported.

This decision was taken during Federal Cabinet’s Monday meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the chair. The move aims at making the voting process fair.

If supported by major political parties, sources said, the constitutional amendments are likely to be presented in the National Assembly before March 5.

The premier has constituted a three-member body of Pervaiz Rasheed, Khawaja Saad Rafique and Irfan Siddiqui to contact the political leadership for the amendment.

Another three-member body has also been formed under Minister of State Anusha Rehman to devise legal strategy in this regard. The body also draws Attorney General of Pakistan and Barrister Zafarullah as its members.

Meanwhile, Federal Information and Broadcasting Minister Pervaiz Rasheed called upon Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan to shun his ego and return to Parliament to back government’s efforts to end horse-trading in upcoming Senate’s polls.

His comments came hours after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed his deep concern over reports of alleged use of money and influence for the forthcoming Senate elections.
