Maaye ne mein kino aakhan: Iqbal Bahoo being remembered on his 4th death anniversary

LAHORE (Web Desk) – Renowned sufi singer Iqbal Bahoo is being remembered on his 4th death anniversary today (Thursday).

Bahoo was born in Gurdaspur, Indian Punjab in 1944 as Muhammad Iqbal. His family migrated to Pakistan after partition and settled in Lahore.

Bahoo began his career from Radio Pakistan and later performed for Pakistan Television. He was a folk singer and had great command over folk songs but the kalam of Sufi poet Hazrat Sultan Bahoo was his specialty which brought him fame and his name was changed from Muhammad Iqbal to Iqbal Bahoo.

To perfect his singing of the Sufi kalam, he is believed to have sought the help of language experts in order to pronounce the words accurately. Bahoo performed for the radio, on stage, and the television in Pakistan but later gave performances around the globe.

His most popular kalams are ‘Alaf Allah chumbay dee booti’ and ‘Maaye ne mein kino aakhan’.

Iqbal Bahoo died on 24th March 2012 due to heart attack in Lahore.
