SC orders relocation of Hussain Lawai, Anwar and AG Majeed to jail

ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar ordered on Monday that Omni Group chairman Anwar Majeed, his son Abdul Ghani Majeed and former Pakistan Stock Exchange chairman Hussain Lawai be relocated to jail from hospital, after analyzing their medical reports.

During the hearing of the case today, the additional attorney general submitted the medical reports of Majeed, his son and Lawai, who have been arrested for involvement in the high-profile money laundering case.

The additional attorney general while submitting the reports informed the court that the medical board has said that Anwar and Abdul Ghani Majeed can be shifted to the jail.

‘Along with the report, the committee has presented its recommendations. The report states that the Omni Group chairman can be made part of investigations,’ argued the additional attorney general.

Justice Nisar then remarked that thankfully, the accused had no life-threatening disease or any such ailment to remain glued to the bed.

The chief justice also observed that Majeed’s counsel should inform the bench if his client wants to get his surgery done, saying the bench had no reservations.

If Majeed is not desirous of surgery then he should be shifted to jail, remarked the top judge.

Justice Aijalul Ahsan also passed a few remarks and highlighted that Anwar Majeed was not receiving an open heart surgery right now and was waiting for the doctor’s directives.

‘If Anwar Majeed feels sick then we will get his heart surgery done,’ said the top judge.

‘Is he an official guest? Shift him to the jail, he has been enjoying for over a month. I don’t remember the last time anyone was admitted to the cardiology unit for as long as Anwar Majeed has been,’ observed the chief justice.

Regarding Abdul Ghani Majeed, Omni Group counsel Shahid Hamid argued that he had low haemoglobin and needs to receive a haemorrhoid surgery done.

The chief justice remarked that the bench had no conflict with the respondents over the scheduled surgeries, however, hastened to add that the accused should be first shifted to jail.

‘Haemorrhoids can be treated with a cream anyway,’ he asserted.

The CJP then directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General (DG) Bashir Memon to shift Anwar, AG Majeed and Hussain Lawai to the hospital when their surgeries are scheduled.

Omni Group chairman Anwar Majeed and his son, Abdul Ghani, were arrested by FIA in August pertaining to a Rs35 billion money laundering case.

Zardari’s close aide Hussain Lawai was arrested in July in connection with the probe.

The FIA is investigating 32 people in relation to money laundering from dubious accounts, including Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur.

On September 17, the Supreme Court had heard Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) petition regarding medical treatment being provided to Anwar and his son, Abdul Ghani Majeed. The court had formed a committee under the surgeon general of Pakistan for the medical examination of the accused.
