The movie which was originally titled ‘Padmavati’, faced a lot of backlash and outrage in India from certain Rajput and Karni Sena activists who staged violent protests across the country claiming the film has alleged historical inaccuracies, resulting in delays in the release.

Censor board chairman, Mobashir Hasan tweeted. “Padmaavat has been declared fit for public exhibition in the cinema houses without any excision by Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC),”  He further said that the movie has been given ‘U’ certification.

Several distributors in Pakistan were also apprehensive over the negative portrayal of Muslim ruler, Alauddin Khilji. However according to Hasan, “CBFC isn’t biased in arts, creativity and healthy entertainment.” He further added that the films certification was done as per rules by the CBFC who co-opted Professor Waqar Ali Shah, chairman of Department of History, Quaid-e-Azam University for his “expert opinion”.

According to Satish Reddy, who is chairman to a key film distributor in Pakistan, Padmaavat is expected to have a “very strong” response in its first week. Padmaavat is set for a worldwide release today.

Prior to receiving U/A certification, movie’s makers were asked to make five modifications including changing the title, making several alterations in its songs and the addition of two disclaimers.
