Israels Device Battery Blasts In Lebanon Raise Security Concerns In Pakistan

ISLAMABAD — The federal government raised its security alert level after reports of phone battery blast orchestrated by Israeli intelligence in Lebanon.

The matter landed in upper house of parliament, where recent Senate Standing Committee meeting on Science and Technology, Chairman called for full briefing from federal government regarding mobile phone testing protocols, especially following recent terror incidents.

The political representatives in Senate expressed concerns about safety of growing number of unregulated mobile phone imports. Agha questioned the adequacy of Pakistan’s testing facilities and urged the Ministry of Science and Technology to confirm that the devices available are safe, stating, “These are not mobile phones but bombs that we keep close to our chests.”

The committee also briefly addressed domestic cement sector, with Senator Shibli Faraz highlighting its significant debts. He proposed that issue might need to be taken to the top court or the Public Accounts Committee if needed.

The committee members further called on officials from Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) to provide detailed reports on their outstanding debts in the next meeting, criticizing the PSQCA for its lack of effective monitoring despite a 10 percent revenue increase this year.
