KARACHI – The Sindh High Court on Monday commuted the death sentence awarded to Shahrukh Jatoi to life imprisonment in a case pertaining to the murder of a youngster in Karachi.
The verdict was announced by a division bench of the provincial high court comprising Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar; the court commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment for co-accused Siraj Talpur in the murder of 20-year-old Shahzeb Khan.
The court upheld the life imprisonment sentence for Sajjad Talpur and Ghulam Murtaza Lashari as it dismissed the appeals filed by the co-accused.
Former chief justice Saqib Nisar had directed the Sindh High Court to announce the verdict within a span of three months about the pending appeals.
The former top judge, during his surprise visit to a Jail in Karachi, expressed his displeasure after finding a refrigerator, Television and mobile phone in the room allocated to Shahrukh Jatoi; he was later shifted to the death cell on then CJP’s orders.

Shahrukh Jatoi was involved in the murder of Shahzeb, the son of a police officer in December 2012. An anti-terrorism court in Karachi had earlier awarded death sentence to Shahrukh Jatoi and Siraj Talpur.
Moreover, Siraj’s brother Nawab Sajjad Ali Talpur and Siraj’s employee Ghulam Murtaza Lashari were sentenced to life term by the court.
The family of Shahzaib had pardoned all the killers involved in the murder. Filing affidavits before the SHC, the family submitted that they had pardoned the appellants outside the court without any pressure, coercion or interest but in the name of Almighty Allah.
A video of Shahrukh Jatoi’s convey barrelling down the road after being freed stumped the internet and drew the attention of social media users who called for justice.
Jatoi was arrested from the premises of the Supreme Court last year after the former CJP took a suo moto notice of the release.
