Iran seizes foreign tanker in Persian Gulf over fuel smuggling

TEHRAN – Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Thursday they had detained a “foreign tanker” and 12 of its crew for allegedly smuggling fuel in the Gulf over the weekend.

The tanker was seized on Sunday “south of the (Iranian) island of Larak” in the Strait of Hormuz, the force’s Sepahnews website said.

The Guards did not detail the name or provenance of the vessel. It only said the oil tanker had 12 foreign crew members on board and was involved in smuggling one million litres of fuel from Iranian smugglers to foreign customers.

It comes just days after an oil tanker based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) disappeared off trackers in Iranian territorial waters.

The UAE-based tanker has not been confirmed as the vessel seized by Iranian forces.

The Panamanian-flagged oil tanker MT Riah stopped transmitting its location overnight on Sunday near Qeshm Island, which has a Revolutionary Guard base on it, according to data listed on tracking site Maritime Traffic.
