ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Dr Shahid Nawaz, who was under treatment for the gunshot wounds he sustained outside Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on February 14, passed away at Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi, on Friday.
Dr Nawaz, a cardiologist, was being kept on ventilator after a neuro-surgery, according to PIMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Javed Akram. His family had demanded the government transfer him abroad for better treatment.
“Dr Nawaz was shot shortly after a heated argument with the relatives of a patient over placing stents in his coronary arteries,” said sources who wished anonymity, adding after shooting the doctor in the head outside the cardiology ward, the unidentified gunman and his associate fled. They are still at large.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has expressed grief over Dr Nawaz’s demise in a condolence message to Nawaz’s family, directed the authorities concerned to take a swift action to thwart such incidents in the future.
Sharif also directed that better security arrangements be ensured at hospitals, schools and other public places.
