Saudi Arabia confirms 1100 deaths in Haj stampede

MINA (Web Desk) – Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, a focal person of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, on Monday confirmed the death of 40 Pakistani pilgrims in Thursday’s stampede at Mina in Saudi Arabia.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Chaudhry said that 35 Pakistanis were injured and 68 were still missing.

“On the directive of Prime Minister Sharif, government will pay Rs500, 000 to each family of the martyrs of Mina stampede,” he announced.

He said that 228 Pakistanis who went missing after the stampede, were found and re-united with their families.

Chaudhary said the government would send two to three members of each martyr to Makkah for Umrah after the completion of Haj operation.

To a question, he said the Saudi government had released photos of 1,100 martyrs and shared their list with our embassy in Riyadh.

Manzoor ur Haq, Pakistan’s ambassador to Riyadh, also confirmed the figures shared by Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.
