International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking being observed today

LAHORE (Staff Report) – In a bid to renew commitment to achieving a drug-free society, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is being observed today (Sunday) around the globe under the theme “Listen First”.

The day is aimed at increasing support for prevention of drug use that is based on science and making an effective investment in the well-being of children and youth, their families and their communities.

On 7 December 1987, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously decided to mark June 26 as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to underscore its determination in achieving a world free of drug abuse.

The UN General Assembly had held a Special Session on drugs in April this year, which marked an important milestone in achieving the goals set in the policy document of 2009, that, among other things, sets goals to be achieved by 2019.
