SKARDU – The bodies of five more climbers who were killed in the Broad Peak avalanche have been transported to Skardu, officials said on Thursday.
With the latest recovery, the bodies of eight climbers have now been brought to Skardu, while search operations continue for two missing mountaineers.
According to the deputy commissioner, a ground recovery team comprising Pakistani and Nepali climbers recovered the bodies of eight mountaineers, including renowned Nepali climber and world record-holder Nirmal Purja. Efforts are still underway to locate Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi and a foreign female mountaineer.
The avalanche struck Broad Peak a few days ago, killing 10 climbers in one of the deadliest incidents in the mountain’s history.
Alpine Club President said the tragedy was one of the worst disasters ever recorded on Broad Peak. He said the bodies of two climbers were recovered on the first day, while only some body parts of a third victim were initially found. The first recoveries included a Nepali climber and an Omani woman.
He added that the Pakistan Army provided helicopters for the recovery mission. Five bodies were airlifted earlier, while the bodies of four Nepali climbers and one Chinese climber were transported to Skardu on Thursday.
