A viral video of newlywed woman, a doctor and her apparently confused in-laws is doing rounds online with debate over pregnancy calculations, medical communication and the deeply rooted social pressures faced by women.
The newly married woman can be heard sobbing as her family questions how she could be “two months pregnant” when her marriage is only a month old. The family appears convinced that the pregnancy timeline does not match the duration of the marriage. The doctor repeatedly attempts to explain that pregnancy is medically dated from the first day of a woman’s last menstrual period, not from the day conception actually occurs.

The gynecologist reassures family that the baby is their son and brother’s child, even telling them that a DNA test could be conducted after birth if they still had doubts. The context triggered intense reactions on social media, with users divided between criticism of the family’s apparent suspicion and questions about whether the doctor should have explained the medical terminology in simpler language.
The apparent contradiction stems from the way pregnancy is medically dated. Doctors generally calculate gestational age from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). As a result, the pregnancy clock effectively begins around two weeks before ovulation and conception in a typical menstrual cycle.
This means a woman can be medically described as being several weeks pregnant even though conception occurred more recently.
A full-term pregnancy is conventionally calculated as around 40 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period. Because conception usually occurs around two weeks after the beginning of that cycle, the medical calculation can appear to be roughly two weeks ahead of the actual time since conception.
This is why the phrase “two months pregnant” does not necessarily mean that conception occurred two months earlier. Pregnancy is dated from the previous menstrual period because conception generally occurs around the ovulation period of that cycle. Pregnancy is calculated from the previous menstrual period because the mother becomes pregnant around the ovulation day of the previous cycle, doctors said.
Ovulation generally occurs around 14 days before the next menstrual period, although the exact timing can vary between women and between cycles. Using the last menstrual period provides doctors with a standard reference point that can be used to estimate gestational age and the expected date of delivery.
An early ultrasound can also help assess the pregnancy’s development and estimate the due date based on fetal measurements.
Around half of the women visiting outpatient departments may not understand how pregnancy is medically calculated. She says the proportion could be substantially higher in remote areas, potentially reaching around 90%.
Whether a newlywed woman understands the terminology, she adds, depends largely on her education, background and access to information. The issue therefore becomes particularly sensitive when a woman becomes pregnant shortly after marriage and relatives interpret the medical timeline literally.
The viral video has exposed a far more serious issue than a misunderstanding over dates. For many social media users, the most disturbing aspect was the apparent suspicion directed toward the newlywed woman.
The controversy has also raised questions about effective communication between doctors and patients. Medical professionals are expected to explain diagnoses, treatments, risks and alternatives in language patients and their families can understand.
Social media users argued that simply telling the family the pregnancy was “two months old” without immediately explaining the dating method could create unnecessary suspicion and doctors should consider the educational and social background of the people sitting in front of them.
The situation became even more controversial when the doctor reportedly asked the husband whether it was a love marriage and whether he trusted his wife, and she reportedly congratulated the couple and sent them home. The reference to a love marriage itself became a subject of discussion online, with some users arguing that it unnecessarily intensified the family’s suspicion.
A pregnancy is generally dated from the first day of the last menstrual period. Ovulation and conception usually occur later in the cycle, meaning the medical pregnancy count includes a period before conception. Therefore, a woman who conceived only a few weeks ago can medically be described as being further along in pregnancy than the time that has actually passed since conception.
