MUMBAI – Police have arrested a 28-year-old man who allegedly disguised himself as a transgender person to enter a woman’s home and sexually assault her in Indian city of Mumbai, according to reports.
The case was registered after the woman reported the alleged incident at a police station. Investigators subsequently examined CCTV footage from the surrounding area as part of the investigation.
According to police, CCTV footage allegedly showed a man wearing a sari and boarding an autorickshaw after the incident. Investigators traced his movements and arrested him from a settlement in the Khari Gaon area of Thane, the report said.
Police alleged that the suspect told investigators he had disguised himself as a transgender person and entered the house by posing as someone who could perform a ritual to remove the effects of the evil eye.
He allegedly persuaded the woman to go to a bedroom on the pretext of performing the ritual and then sexually assaulted her after threatening her.
Investigators also allegedly found that the suspect used different disguises, including that of a transgender person and a beggar, to approach people.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
