SC imposes ban on selling of substandard cooking oil, ghee at Utility Stores

ISLAMABAD – Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan Tuesday has imposed a ban on the sale of substandard cooking oil and ghee at Utility Stores until the report on quality comes.

The SC was hearing a suo moto case and said that heart diseases are increasing among children with the use of poor quality cooking oil and ghee. The court also sought quality report of the products within ten days.

The apex court also directed to check the quality of tetra packs, plastic pouches and plastic water bottles, adding that plastic bottles get expired after exposing to sun.

When the counsel for Utility Stores presented a report regarding cooking oil and ghee, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar remarked that do not indulge in the reports, come to ground realities.

CJP said that use of Chinese salt increased the heart diseases, blood pressure and other diseases, and directed Pakistan Standards & Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) to file a report regarding this salt.

It may be mentioned here that after taking charge as chief justice of Pakistan, Justice Saqib Nisar had taken his first suo moto notice against the selling of substandard cooking oil at utility stores.
