Peshawar s first female SHO embarks on becoming role model for fellows

PESHAWAR – In a first, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police has appointed a female as station house officer (SHO) in Peshawar who hopes to become a role model for her colleagues.

Rizwana Hameed, who was already working as SHO for the women police station, has now been given the additional charge of the Gulberg police station making her the first woman from the right-aligned city to perform duties as a full-scale SHO. She assumed charge of her new assignment on Friday and contended women were no less than men.

“Women are as capable as men. Ladies police have recently joined courses considered very tough like initial commandoes course and BDU courses,” Rizwana said talking to The Express Tribune.

She added that recently a joint course was conducted in PTC Hangu in which women showed their abilities as well as mental and physical toughness required for the police job.

“I want to be a role-model for all women in the K-P police and I really appreciate the support of senior police officials to this end,” she noted.

SHO Rizwana joined police force as ASI in 1996 and had been serving as SHO in the women police station since 2014.

The directives for the appointment were issued by CCPO Tahir Khan as part of large-scale transfers. At least 13 people were transferred and reappointed across the district but Rizwana’s appointment became a headline.

It is relevant to mention that Rizwana’s appointment follows designation of female police officer Ghazala Sharif as SHO in Lahore after 17 years.
