Iran says US violates spirit of nuclear pact by imposing new sanction

Tehran – Showing concerns over recent sanctions imposed by the US, Iran’s Foreign Minister Javed Zarif has said that Washington violated the 2015 nuclear pact, adding that such measures would damage already tensed relations.

Zarif in his statement that came after the US on Tuesday imposed new sanctions against Iran said, “It violates the spirit of the deal. We will see whether it violates the letter of the deal, and we will act accordingly”.

The foreign minister said the US wanted to “poison the international atmosphere” by slapping new sanctions.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council — the US, Britain, France, China and Russia — plus Germany inked the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in July 2015, under which nuclear activities of Iran were limited by allowing its reintegration in the economy of the world.

Zarif highlighted that US President Donald Trump was continuously terming the nuclear deal a bad deal, adding that no sanctions were being imposed on countries which are promoting terrorism in the West Asia.

US Sanctions

On Tuesday, the US imposed new sanctions on companies and individuals that it says provide material support to Iran’s military, as well as on organisations involved in the country’s ballistic missile program. The restrictions are not related to Iran’s nuclear program.

The US Department of the Treasury “designated 16 entities and individuals for engaging in support of illicit Iranian actors or transnational criminal activity” .

The announcement comes the day after the Trump administration certified that Tehran is in compliance with the terms of the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement designed to ensure Iran doesn’t make nuclear weapons.

The new sanctions “target procurement of advanced military hardware, such as fast attack boats and unmanned aerial vehicles, and send a strong signal that the United States cannot and will not tolerate Iran’s provocative and destabilising behaviour,” said US Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin in a statement.

“We will continue to target the [Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps] and pressure Iran to cease its ballistic missile program and malign activities in the region,” he added.
