Sugar crisis looms as mills halt supply to market

LAHORE – All major sugar mills have halted the supply of sugar to the market protesting the lack of a proper policy for them.

Fears are looming that this step would not only lead to a sugar crisis but would also put a burden on consumers in the shape of hiked domestic price.

The owners have threatened that would not resume the supply until a future policy is introduced by the government.

They were the of view that mills procured sugarcane against high prices, but the price of sugar in the local market is low causing losses to the owners, adding that the government did not allow them to export sugar to recover the losses.
