KARACHI – The imposition of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Ordinance 1999 has been revoked in Sindh, a PPP stronghold province.
According to local media, the law department has issued a notification repealing the Ordinance, that empowers the NAB to probe corruption in government institutions.
After its cancellation, new Sindh Accountability Act will replace it, while the authorities have ordered the printing of the new act.
After the enforcement of the new Act, the NAB will not be able to take actions against any employees of provincial government departments, but it can carry out action against any federal government employee.
Talking to Geo News, Sindh Law Minister Zialul Nijar said that the law, which has been approved by the provincial assembly has come into force and the role of NAB Ordinance has finished in the province.
He added that the provincial accountability agency will be totally autonomous that will help eradicating the corruption from the province.
It is also being reported that Sindh Governor Chaudhry Zubair has not signed the new Act.
On July 23, the Sindh government passed a bill to revoke the NAB Ordinance amid a rowdy protest from opposition.
Later the law was sent to the Sindh Governor for approval but it was not approved by him due to some shortfalls.
The provincial government sent the amended law for approval to the governor again, but it is yet unclear whether he has signed it.
