Pakistan slip to 7th spot in latest ICC Test rankings after 0-2 defeat against Sri Lanka

DUBAI – Pakistan have slipped to seventh in the latest Test rankings released by the International Cricket Council (ICC), following their humiliating 0-2 series defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday.

The rejuvenated Sri Lankan team, led by Dinesh Chandimal, not only beat Pakistan by 68 runs in the second Test on the fifth and final day in Dubai but also managed to climb above their opponents to reach the number six position.

Pakistan, chasing 317 to win, were bowled out for 248 in their second innings with Dilruwan Perera finishing with 5-98.

Resuming at 198-5 Pakistan lost Sarfraz Ahmed for 65 while Asad Shafiq scored 112 for his 11th Test century.

Sri Lanka won the first Test by 21 runs in Abu Dhabi.

As a result of their memorable 2-0 series victory in UAE, Sri Lanka have gained four rating points to move to sixth in the Test rankings. On the other hand, Pakistan have lost five rating points to plummet to the seventh position.

The two teams will now play a five-match one-day series followed by three Twenty20 internationals, the last of which is scheduled for Lahore on October 29.

India continue to lead the Test rankings with 125 rating points. Having brushed aside a woefully incompetent Bangladesh team in the recently completed series on home soil, South Africa gained only a solitary rating point and retained their second spot at 111 rating points. With 105 rating points, England occupy the third position in the rankings.

Since adopting UAE as their ‘home’ base in November 2010 as a consequence of security issues in their native place, Pakistan played as many as 9 Test series before suffering their first series defeat in the region.

Pakistan have no Test series scheduled until May next year when they visit England for two matches.
