Samsung to strike Apple with new Galaxy S6 Plus

SEOUL (Web Desk) – Samsung, which scored its first round of victory over Apple this year with a better first quarter sales, is said to be planning a massive assault on Apple. And this time it plans to come out with a rival for Apple iPhone 6 Plus and, according to an Italian website, might even decide to call its new device the Samsung Galaxy S6 Plus.

The Emirates247 reported the new device is expected to be an improvised and much larger version of Galaxy S6 Edge.

The new device will have a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display bigger than 5.1 inch Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. The iPhone 6 Plus also features a similar 5.5 inch display.

Samsung used to release its phablet-sized device as Galaxy Grand but might well opt to rebrand it as Galaxy S6 Plus in an attempt to take on rival Apple.

The report said Samsung is working on two projects codenamed Project Zero 2 and Project Noble.

Project Zero 2 is Galaxy S6 Plus, while Project Noble could well be the Galaxy Note 5 with a new curved back. However, the Italian website HDblog.it does not quote any source and adds as a rejoinder that the rumour could as well be wrong.

Samsung smelt victory this year as the first quarter entirely belonged to the new Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge.

The new report by Gartner last week said Samsung had sold 81 million devices during the first three months of the year compared to 60 million by Apple. Lenovo and Huawei held the third and fourth place with 18 million smartphones sold.

According to the report worldwide sales of smartphones to end users reached 336 million units, an increase of 19.3 per cent during the first quarter of 2015.

Although Samsung did score over Apple this year, the numbers did drop compared to the same period in 2014. While Samsung held about 24.2 per cent of all smartphone sales during the first quarter of 2014, it had sold about 85 million devices and about 30.4 per cent of all devices sold during the same period last year.

Apple increased its performance this year with about 17 per cent of overall smartphone sales, compared to 43 million devices it had sold during the first quarter of 2014.

Meanwhile, in another leak, reported by Sammobile, Samsung might not have completely forgotten its Galaxy S5 line-up and may soon launch the Galaxy S5 Neo (SM-G903F).

As for the specifications, the Galaxy S5 Neo is said to feature the same set of innards as the previous year’s flagship but with a different processor and front-facing camera resolution. While the Galaxy S5 sported a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC, its Neo variant might come with the company’s own 1.6GHz 64-bit octa-core Exynos 5422 chipset and a Mali-T720 GPU. Also, the rumoured smartphone’s front-facing camera is said to come with 5-megapixel sensor instead of a 2-megapixel sensor. The handset is also said to sport the same dimensions and the weight.

Furthermore, the Galaxy S5 Neo is tipped to come with LTE-A connectivity, which gives up to four times the speed of a regular 4G LTE connectivity. A dual-SIM version (SM-G903FD) is also being hinted at.
