LAHORE – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has finally chosen a name for candidate of next prime minister ahead of next general elections in 2018.
English daily, The News, claimed that the decision has been taken during a meeting of PML-N’s stalwarts at Jati Umra residence of Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday.
The decision, which has quashed rumours claiming that former prime minister’s daughter Maryam Nawaz will hold reins of the party, has been announced in favour of Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The newspaper quoted Nawaz Sharif as saying, “Shehbaz has always worked to further the party policies for public welfare and this unflagging attitude earned him the opportunity to be trusted for a higher office. We are a democratic political party where everyone is free to voice their mind. Shehbaz has had difference of opinion over some issues yet his commitment to the party overrules all else, which is why he has never violated the party discipline”.
Nawaz said that Shehbaz had never disappointed him. He also hailed the efforts made by Punjab CM for development of people in the province.
Announcing the decision, the party president urged the party members to stay away from creating any conflict and making contradictory statements in this regard as such behaviour will not be tolerated. He directed the party members to stand along with party’s stance.
Revealing party’s future agenda, he said that election campaign and movement for restoration of justice and supremacy of civilians in the democratic system would be run jointly. He added that civilian supremacy and sanctity of vote will be the slogans for the election campaign.
The announcement by Nawaz had also quashed the rumours regarding conflict within the family which has been reported by media after Nawaz selected Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi following his disqualification in the Panamagate case.
