Kasur rape case: Punjab govt includes 3 more police officers in JIT

LAHORE – In order to resolve the case regarding killing of seven-year-old girl after being raped in Kasur, the Punjab government has expanded the joint investigation team (JIT) by including three more senior police officers.

The JIT, which is tasked with probing the case by Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday, was being led by Punjab police Additional Inspector General Abubakar Khuda Bux.

Members of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Sheikhupura Regional Police Officer Zulfiqar Hameed were part of the team.

The decision to include more members in the JIT was taken during a high level meeting on Thursday regarding the brutal act that surfaced earlier this week.

On the other hand, Punjab Chief Minister has also directed provincial counter terrorism department to investigate the matter separately.

During the meeting, the chief minister also expressed resentment over the poor performance of the police in the Kasur as they failed to control agitation after the tragic incident.

The father of seven-year-old Zainab who was found raped and murdered has demanded that the head of the JIT be replaced.

“It has been learnt that the JIT head – Additional IGP Abubakar Khuda Bakhsh – is a ‘Qadiani’,” said Mr Ameen at a press conference in Kasur on Thursday while rejecting the probing team’s leader tasked by the Punjab chief minister on Wednesday.

“We don’t have trust in the JIT head,” the victim’s father stated and appealed to “replace him with a Muslim”.

Zainab Case

Zainab went missing five days prior to her body being found in a heap of garbage in Kasur. As per details, the girl was abducted near her home when she was on her way to Holy Quran class. An FIR was registered on January 4 by the victim’s uncle Muhammad Adnan as the girl’s parents were out of the country when she went missing. The FIR was registered at Sadar police station in Kasur. Her body was found on Tuesday night.

The incident stirred violent protest in Kasur in which two people were also killed in police firing, worsening the situation.
