CW18: Pakistan’s Muhammad Asif beats Kenyan boxer to reach quarterfinals

GOLD COAST – Pakistani boxer Syed Muhammad Asif has reached the quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Games 2018, taking place in Australia, after beating a Kenyan boxer in the men’s 52kg category on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old defeated his Kenyan opponent Brian Agina 4-1 in the Australian city of Gold Coast.

Asif, who belongs to Balochistan, will next face Scotland’s Reece McFadden on Wednesday in the third quarter-final.

Ali Ahmad, another Pakistani boxer who was competing in the 60kg category, lost to England’s Calum French.

Earlier, Pakistan’s otherwise disappointing campaign in the Commonwealth Games received a little boost when their young weightlifter Nooh Dastagir Butt won a bronze medal on Monday.

The 20-year-old Nooh, who won a silver medal in the Commonwealth weightlifting championship, claimed the bronze medal in the +105kg weightlifting competition.

Nooh began the Games as one of the few medal prospects for Pakistan and did live up to the expectations by lifting an overall 395kg to find a place on the medals’ podium.
