Scotland Yard shelves inquiry against Nawaz s grandsons for London brawl

LONDON – Scotland Yard has decided not to pursue its inquiry against Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s son Junaid Safdar and Hussain Nawaz’s son Zakaria Sharif for being involved in a fight outside Avenfield flats, a few months ago.

The brawl, that erupted outside the upscale apartments of former ruling family, saw one man being taken to hospital for minor injuries, however, the police has decided not to take any action against the duo.

Junaid Safdar and Zakaria Sharif were detained on the evening of July 12, 2018 after Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz left from Harley Street Clinic for Heathrow airport to return to Pakistan after being awarded sentences in the Avenfiled reference.

Junaid and Zakaria were met by a group of protesters as they approached the back entrance of their apartment from the Park Lane side; they were returning home after seeing off Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz.

Several protests were staged outside the flats by Pakistani expats and activists of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) with demands that the demonstrations were aimed at taking possession of the Avenfield flats.

In a CCTV footage, one of the protesters wearing knuckles also threw shopping trolley at them prompting a retaliation in which one of the attackers fell on the floor.

A spokesman of Scotland Yard detailed on Tuesday that ‘officers attended’ to calls of a fight and ‘one person was taken to a central London hospital for treatment owing to minor injuries’.

‘Two men aged 20 and 23 were arrested on suspicion of assault. They were taken to a central London police station for questioning. They were subsequently released with no further action’, detailed the officer in conversation with Geo News.

The Police confirmed that both Junaid and Zakaria had been informed that no further action would be taken.

A well-placed source familiar with the case said that the police probed the case and found that both acted in self-defence.
