MULTAN – The wildlife department have arrested two people following charges of selling tortoise meat and illegal hunting in Khanewal, a city in South Punjab.
Officials told media that the accused were caught red-handed during a raid in the area of Saraye Sidhoo when they were hunting tortoise, adding that 50 kilogrammes of tortoise meat have also been confiscated during the action.
They said that the raids were being conducted to arrest the other accused involved in such illegal activity.
The accused, who are in the custody of the wildlife department, will be produced before the magistrate for further legal action.
The culprits were involved in illegal business for six months and used to supply the meat to local hotels for the consumption of Chinese nationals.
The Punjab government has imposed a ban on the sale and hunting of the reptile.
