PYONGYANG – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has warned the United States that the nuclear button was always on the desk of his office, raising alarm bells in Washington, currently celebrating New Year.
“The entire mainland of the US is within the range of our nuclear weapons and the nuclear button is always on the desk of my office. They should accurately be aware that this is not a threat but a reality,” said Kim during his annual New Year’s Day address.
“No matter how much America wants to attack us with their military might and nuclear power, they know that now we possess such great nuclear power and therefore they will not dare,” Kim said, adding that his country’s greatest achievement of 2017 was the “historic accomplishment of completing our nuclear capabilities.”
The Pyongyang leader said that his country should focus on mass-producing nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles for operational deployment but hastened to add that these weapons would be used only if security is threatened.
After having threatened Trump-led America through nuclear deterrence, the North Korean leader offered an olive branch to South Korea, saying he was “open to dialogue” with Seoul.
“When it comes to North-South relations, we should lower the military tensions on the Korean Peninsula to create a peaceful environment,” Kim said in his speech.

North Korea tested intercontinental ballistic missiles and conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in September defying international warnings and sanctions, raising apprehensions of a new nuclear conflict on the Korean peninsula.
Recently, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a new set of US-drafted sanctions on North Korea for its November ballistic missile test, seeking to limit its access to refined petroleum products, crude oil and its earnings from overseas workers.
Earlier, in August and September, the UN levied sanctions against North Korea while the US took unilateral steps against the country in July, August, September, October and November.
