TEL AVIV – As Israel prepares for massive strike, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has taken a hardline stance against the demonstrators.
Smotrich has directed the Ministry of Finance to withhold pay to employees who join the strike, intensifying the conflict between the government and those demanding action on the hostage situation.
The strike is being led by the families of Israeli hostages and the influential trade union Histadrut. The develpoment comes aftr recent discovery of six Israeli hostages’ bodies in Gaza, which has fueled public outrage and increased pressure on the Israeli government.
In his remarks, Smotrich lamented the head of the trade union, accusing him of advancing the interests of Hamas leader Yehya Sinwar rather than representing Israeli workers. His comments further heightened tensions, as the government grapples with both domestic crisis and the broader political implications.
Histadrut’s leader defended the strike, stating that it is the only way to compel those in power to address the crisis. He announced that from tomorrow morning, the entire Israeli economy will be on strike, reflecting the gravity of the situation and the scale of the response.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Lapid also voiced support for the strike, aligning with the broader call for action to secure the hostages’ release.
Israeli government and the striking groups face mounting pressure, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation over the future of the hostage negotiations and the country’s response to the crisis.
