WASHINGTON – Just a few weeks after the nationwide protest in the United States against the killing of black men by the police, a black woman and her 5-year-old son were shot by the Baltimore County Police during a raid over unpaid driving fines in Randallstown, Maryland.
The police had raided the apartment after the 23-year-old woman, Korryn Gaines, failed to appear in court over several traffic charges against her.
According to media reports, the police opened fire at them when the mother reportedly threatened the personnel with a shotgun. Korryn Gaines, the woman, died on the spot while her son was shot in a limb and taken to the hospital.
Police officials refused to share any information about the condition of the injured boy with reporters. They also did not make it clear whether the boy was actually shot by police or the bullet fired by his mother.
No details were released about the officer who shot dead the black mother, however, the campaigners believed that it was a continuation of a series of the controversial police shootings involving people of color.
The incident is being condemned by Ms Gaines’s friends, relatives and supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement across the United States.
