LAHORE – Six police officers were nominated in a criminal case for allegedly torturing a man to death in Lahore, it emerged on Tuesday.
The victim was identified as Amir and according to a first information report (FIR), he was summoned at North Cantt police station by Sub-Inspector Zeeshan on August 28 after which he was taken to an unknown location where he was subjected to torture.
According to the victim’s brother, Amir had been called by Zeeshan in connivance with a civilian, Rana Mohammad Hanif, who has also been nominated in the FIR.
Amir’s family approached the police station but could not meet the sub-inspector. However, on September 2, Zeeshan and two unidentified officers handed over Amir to his family.
Amir was suffering from serious injuries at that time and was taken to the Services Hospital, where he passed away, the FIR stated.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Punjab Arif Nawaz Khan took notice of the incident and ordered that a case be registered against SI Zeeshan, Investigation Officer Nasir Baig and four other officers and asked for a detailed report to be submitted within a day.

Nasir Baig and North Cantt police station’s Station House Officer Khurram Gul have been arrested while Zeeshan is still at large; the victim worked as a gardener in a housing colony.
Spokesman to Chief Minister Punjab, Dr Shahbaz Gill expressed dismay at the incident and assured that stern action would be taken against those involved.

The case comes days after a thief, who made faces at the camera of an ATM booth, passed away while being in police custody; three policemen were booked in that case.
