PM Nawaz, Interior minister Ch Nisar brainstorm on Dawn Leaks controversy

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan held a meeting on Friday to discuss the recommendations of the Dawn Leaks inquiry report.

Sources privy to the developments disclosed that the meeting was crucial regarding a fresh notification to be issued by the government regarding the Dawn Leaks controversy erupted after the story ‘Act against militants or face diplomatic isolation’.

The federal government had issued a notification last week sacking adviser to Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi and ordering investigations against Principal Information Officer (PIO) Rao Tehseen.

The PM’s order added that the editor of Dawn Newspaper, Zaffar Abbas, and reporter Cyril Almeida will be referred to the All Pakistan Newspaper Association (APNS) “for necessary disciplinary action.”

However, the military’s media wing rejected the notification and termed it incomplete stirring a debate regarding the civil-military imbalance.

Afterwards, the premier held a meeting at Raiwind with Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to chalk out a strategy to lessen the civil-military friction.

Punjab’s law minister Rana Sanaullah had claimed that the government would issue a fresh notification this week and it is highly likely that the meeting would have focused on this issue.
