SC summons former Balochistan CMs over mismanaged health, education sectors

QUETTA – The Supreme Court of Pakistan summoned the former Chief Ministers of Balochistan, Sardar Abdul Malik Baloch and Sana Ullah Zehri on Tuesday, as the court conducted hearings of cases related to the condition of colleges and hospitals in the province today.

According to reports, a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar inquired about health facilities from incumbent Chief Minister Balochistan Abdul Quds Bizenjo, who was accompanied by ministers for health and education.

Hearing a case regarding the state of hospitals in Pakistan land-wise biggest province, Justice Nisar asked how young doctors across the province were still on strike despite court orders barring them from doing so.

The top judge while arguing with ministers remarked that health and education were fundamental rights of people but people of the province were deprived of these rights.

According to Articles 184 and 199 of the Constitution, they (court) have the right to intervene wherever basic human rights are violated, he added.

On the other hand, the Chief Minister Balochistan while pleading his case replied that the government was now handling, trying to improve the situation as he himself visited BMC and civil hospitals.

Chief Minister further said that they had neither a policy nor the resources to improve the facilities.

“The policy now has been drafted and he will bring it to the cabinet today,” he asserted.

Secretary Health Saleh Nasar informed the court that a policy was being planned which would be announced within the next ten days to improve the condition of state-run hospitals.

The CJP remarked it seems you don’t know who is responsible for all this mess. He also ordered the former Chief Ministers Abdul Malik Baloch and Sana Ullah Zehri to appear before the court to explain what they had done for education and health during their tenures.
