Hussain Nawaz offered Rs500m bribe, scandal-hit Judge Arshad Malik reveals in affidavit

ISLAMABAD – The recently removed Accountability Court Judge Arshad Malik has claimed that he was offered a Rs500 million cash bribe by the son of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to resign after announcing verdict in the Al-Azizia reference.

In his sensational affidavit submitted to the Islamabad High Court chief justice on Friday, Malik revealed that Hussain Nawaz had also offered to relocate him along with his family to the United Kingdom, Canada or any other country of his choice if he accepted the offer.

As per the affidavit, Hussain had asked Malik to resign on the grounds that he “could no longer deal with the guilt of having convicted” Nawaz under pressure in the Al-Azizia/Hill Metal Establishment reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau.

The judge – who was removed earlier in the day – claimed that Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz offered bribes and threatened with dire consequences to force him into announcing verdicts in favour of Nawaz in the Al-Azizia and Flagship Investments references, and later to coerce him into resigning from his office.

Who’s Nasir Janjua?

The judge also revealed a meeting that took place in early 2018, wherein an acquaintance named Nasir Janjua associated with the PML-N, “implored” him to issue verdicts of acquittal in the Al-Azizia and Flagship references.

The judge quoted Janjua as saying that it was on his personal recommendation that he [Malik] was appointed as judge in the accountability court adding that during the arguments stage of the references’ trial, he was again approached by Janjua with a “financial offer” from Nawaz of Rs100 million but that he refused the offer.

The judge, in his affidavit, said the offer was shortly followed by a “thinly veiled threat of physical harm and intimidation” by Nasir Butt, the PML-N leader who recorded a video which was shared by Maryam Nawaz a few days back.

“The threat was delivered by Nasir Butt saying to me in an intimidating tone that he owed Mian Nawaz Sharif a lot, as he (Nawaz) had helped him avoid punishment for 4-5 murders committed by him (Butt) by using his immense political influence and, therefore, he (Butt) was willing to go to any extent to help [Nawaz] in the trials he was facing,” judge Malik claimed.

He added that after he [judge] refused to accept the bribes and succumb to the alleged threats, “manipulated” video clips were shown by PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz at a press conference.

Meeting with Nawaz Sharif

Arshad Malik also lifted lid on a meeting of him with ousted premier Nawaz Sharif during latter’s six-weeks bail period.

According to the affidavit, the judge met former premier Nawaz Sharif on 6th April and personally told him that his conviction in the Al-Azizia reference was based on legal grounds.

Multan Video

Arshad Malik detailed that he was shown a video captured in Multan which was  ‘secretly recorded and manipulated’ to coerce him.

“Mian Tariq, an old social acquaintance from the time I was serving in Multan as additional district and sessions judge from 2000-2003, showed me a secretly recorded and manipulated immoral video in a compromising position saying that is it you doing this when you were serving in Multan,” the judge wrote.
