SC to announce verdict in Imran, Tareen disqualification case shortly

LAHORE – The Supreme Court (SC) will announce its verdict on the petitions filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Cheif Imran Khan and Secretary General Jehangir Khan Tareen in a short while.

“The decision will be announced at 2:00 pm tomorrow,” said the apex court’s registrar office on Thursday.

The three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justices Nisar, Faisal Arab and Umar Ata Bandial  reserved its judgment after hearing the case on November 14.

In the petitions, which had been field in November last year, accused the PTI leaders of concealing their assets and offshore companies, and receiving foreign funds.

Akram Sheikh and Azid Nafees were among the counsels of the petitioner, whereas Naeem Bukhari argued for Imran. Sikandar Bashir Mohmand advocated for Tareen.

During the hearings, Bukhari argued that the court should not treat the case in line with the Panama Papers case in which former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as both cases are totally different.

Bukhari added that the case against Imran Khan, according to him, was about a young man who could not handle his accounts efficiently.

The bench finally came to the conclusion after conducting over 50 hearings during 405 days.
