LAHORE (Web Desk) – No Pakistani athlete will be able to make it to the Rio Olympics 2016 scheduled to held between 5 to 21 August 2016, it has been revealed.
The seven participants due to represent Pakistan at next month’s Rio Olympics have all been given wildcard entries and stand “no chance” of winning medals, according to Arif Hasan, the Pakistan Olympic Association president.
“They are more or less going for the participation and gaining the experience. Let’s hope next time will be better,” he said.
According to the details, Pakistan has not won a medal at the Olympics since winning the Bronze Medal at the 1992 Olympic Games and Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) does not look interested in betterment of sports as they have been fighting for their rule with another parallel body for many years.
Moreover, in the history of Olympics, Pakistan has won only 2 medals in individual sports, Wrestling in 1960 and Boxing in 1988.
Regarding the relentless decline in sports, the athletes were of the view that due to lack of funds and minimal exposure, it becomes next to impossible to fight any international battle.
“We are behind the rest of the world,” said Inam Butt, a Pakistani wrestling champion who won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. “Our budget, training and facilities are just nothing. How can we compete?”
