Egypt court overturns death sentence against former president Mohamed Morsi in jailbreak case

CAIRO – Egypt’s court of cassation has overturned the death sentence against the country’s deposed president Mohamed Morsi, according to media reports.

Judicial sources also confirmed the court also ordered a retrial on Tuesday.

Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Morsi was overthrown in a military coup by general Sisi in July 2013 after having served just one year of his four-year term. He was sentenced to death in 2015.

The organisation to which he belonged, the Muslim Brotherhood, has since been outlawed, Al-Jazeera reported.

A government crackdown on the movement, as well as other groups, has resulted in tens of thousands of arrests and mass trials.
