ISLAMABAD – A sessions and district court in the federal capital on Wednesday reserved a verdict on a review petition filed by police in a case related to physical remand of PTI leader Shehbaz Gill in sedition case.
Sessions judge Zeba Chaudhry heard arguments from special public prosecutor Raja Rizwan Abbasi and Gill’s legal representatives – Salman Safdar and Faisal Chaudhry.
The judge reserved the verdict after hearing the arguments and it is expected to be announced at 3pm later today.
The hearing of the case comes a day after the Islamabad High Court ordered the sessions court to take up the review petition.
IHC acting Chief Justice Amir Farooq issued the verdict on a petition filed by Advocate-General Jahangir Jadoon last week, seeking its order to declare the decision taken by the district and sessions court null and void and extension in the physical remand of Shahbaz Gill.
Admitting the federal government’s petition, the high court has ordered the sessions court to hear the petition against non-extension in physical remand of Gill.
At the outset of the hearing, the acting chief justice remarked that matters related to remand of suspects did not come under its jurisdiction.
“No matter how serious the offence is, only the magistrate can look into the matter of remand,” Justice Farooq remand.
Meanwhile, the court also took up Shahbaz Gill’s plea, seeking dismissal of the FIR filed against him under sedition charges. He argued that the case filed against him by the federal government is based on malice.
Last week, a court in the federal capital rejected police request seeking extension in physical remand of the PTI leader. Police argued that mobile phone is yet to be recovered from Gill.
However, the court rejected the petition and sent him on judicial remand to Adiala Jail.
On August 9, Shehbaz Gill was arrested in the country’s federal capital on sedition charges.
The Imran Khan’s chief of staff was taken into custody in connection with an FIR registered against him after a troll campaign against institutions. He was detained near the residence of PTI chief Imran Khan.
Reports in local media said Gill was booked under various sections including 505, 120, 120-B, 153, 153-A, 124-A, and 131 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
