BHUBANESWAR – At least 22 patients were killed and several others turned critical after fire broke out at the Sum Hospital in Bhubaneswar on Monday evening, Indian media reported.
The 22 were declared dead in the privately-owned AMRI hospital and govt-owned Capital Hospital, where they were admitted after evacuation from SUM, said Khurda district collector. At least 40 more patients admitted in different hospitals are stated to be critical and fighting for their life in the city.
The blaze was suspected to have been triggered by an electric short circuit in the dialysis ward on the first floor of the private hospital which spread to the nearby Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
In 2011, a major blaze had engulfed AMRI Hospital in Kolkata, killing 89 people, including 85 patients.
