Match-fixing was at its peak in 1996, claims Shoaib Akhter

KARACHI – Former speed star bowler Shoaib Akhter has claimed that match-fixing was at its peak back in 1996, saying he never got involved in any such activity.

Shoaib in a candid conversation with Geo News opined that it’s good that both Shahid Afridi and Javed Miandad resolved the dispute without harnessing legal options. He claimed that he had advised Shahid Afridi not to send legal notice to Javed Miandad.

Shedding light on his cricket career, he maintained that the ambiance of the dressing room was too strange at that time. Rawalpindi express went on to say that he advised fast bowler Muhammad Aamir in 2010 to choose his friends wisely.

Citing the comfortable position of Pakistan in first test match against Australia, the former pacer expressed satisfaction and said that there are 70 percent chances that Pakistan would bag victory.

He also urged International Cricket Council to analyze weather conditions before going for a match with a pink ball as Wahab Riaz expressed concerns going with the ball in night.

It is relevant to mention that Javed Miandad was part of Pakistan’s squad in 1996 under the captaincy of Wasim Akram, though Shoaib didn’t name anyone for match-fixing.
