Asif Zardari files petition against FIA s probe into fake accounts case

KARACHI – Former president Asif Ali Zardari has filed another petition regarding an ongoing investigation of the fake accounts case, urging the Supreme Court to restrain the Federal Investigation Agency from probing the alleged scam.

The petition filed on Friday contends that the FIA JIT was ‘illegally’ carrying out a ‘parallel inquiry’ and was violating the Supreme Court order. The apex court had directed an FIA Joint Investigation Team last month to assist the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) when required.

The appeal said that the JIT had summoned the legal adviser of the Zardari Group, Abu Bakr Zardari on Feb 12 which equals ‘parallel exercise of power’ and was against Article 13 of the Constitution as well as the top court’s verdict.

The former president argued in his plea that investigation of the same case by two departments at the same time was likely to prejudice trial of the accused persons.

The National Accountability Bureau is investigating the case and FIA prosecutor had informed a banking court that NAB chairman had signed the request for the case’s transfer and record was being transferred to the accountability watchdog.

The Supreme Court had directed NAB to conclude its investigation within two months after former chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar took up the case.

The JIT had accused 172 people of having fake bank accounts and indulging in money laundering in its investigation report. The report was submitted to the top court in December last year.

Asif Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur had secured bail from a banking court in Karachi. The court has recently extended the bail of the duo till March 5th.
