China urges Pakistan, India to exercise maximum restraint, seek dialogue

BEIJING – China has called on Pakistan and India to exercise restraint and seek dialogue to deescalate ongoing tension between the neighbouring countries.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang in Beijing on Wednesday said that “we hope that both India and Pakistan should take initiatives that are conducive to promoting dialogue.”

He said both countries should meet halfway and make active efforts for lasting peace and stability in South Asia.

“What we are concerned about is that India and Pakistan, as important countries of the South Asian subcontinent, can maintain good neighbourly and friendly relations,” Lu said.

Yesterday, Pakistan Air Force jets targeted two Indian warplanes in a dogfight and shot them down along the Line of Control (LoC).

Two Indian pilots were killed as their plane went down into flames inside Budgam area of Indian Occupied Kashmir, while one Wing Commander Abhi Nandan was captured alive by Pakistan troops on the ground in the Azad Kashmir region.

The retaliatory act comes after Pakistan warned India of a “surprise” on Tuesday in the wake of Indian military aircraft’s intrusion into Pakistani airspace.
