LONDON – British Prime Minister Theresa May has said she will step down if her Brexit deal is given a go-ahead by the parliament in what appears to be ‘back me then sack me ‘arrangement.
In a meeting with lawmakers from her Conservative party on Wednesday, the premier opined she would step down provided the twice-defeated divorce deal she negotiated with the European Union passes at a third vote.
“I know some people are worried that if you vote for the withdrawal agreement, I will take that as a mandate to rush on into phase two without the debate we need to have. I won’t; I hear what you are saying,” May said, according to a statement released by her office.
May expressed that she was prepared to leave the job earlier than ‘intended in order to do what is right for our country and our party.’

It is the first time May has acknowledged that she was prepared to quit in a bid to secure the votes for her Brexit deal to pass.
Britain was due to leave the European Union on March 29 but has been granted a delay until April 12, after legislators overwhelmingly rejected May’s divorce deal twice.
“I know there is a desire for a new approach – and new leadership – in the second phase of the Brexit negotiations, and I won’t stand in the way of that,” she said.
May, who has faced repeated blows during the painful Brexit process fell short of announcing any date to step down from office.
