SYDNEY (Web Desk) – Australia, on Sunday, defeated Sri Lanka by 64 runs, in pool A match during the ongoing cricket world cup 2015, when Lankans failed to chase the target of 377 runs in Sydney cricket ground.
Sri Lanka’s experienced Sangakara thrashed Aussies with 107 runs but the whole team collapsed during 47 over of the innings falling 64 runs short of the target. Dilshan and Chandimal managed to score 62 and 52 runs respectively despite 6 batsmen failed to get into double figures.
Australia’s Faulkner ousted three Lankans, whereas Starc and Johnson supported him by picking two wickets each.
When Aussies opened batting, Finch and Warner hardly stood at the crease and were bowled out at 41 runs in 9th over of the innings. Later on Smith, Clarke, Maxwell and Watson contributed 72, 68, 102 and 67 runs respectively to lift a big target.
Malinga and Perera both picked 2 wickets whereas Mathews, Dilshan and Parasanna managed for one wicket each.
Earlier, Australia won the toss and chose to bat in the crunch World Cup Pool A game against Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.
The 1996 winners Sri Lanka lead the Aussies by one point in the group standings and a win would clinch second spot in the pool behind leaders New Zealand.
Shane Watson returned to Australia’s line-up, batting at No.6 for Mitchell Marsh after he was dropped for the last win over Afghanistan, while spinner Xavier Doherty will get his first start in the tournament for paceman Josh Hazlewood.
Sri Lanka made three changes, with leg-spinner Seekkuge Prasanna, batsman Upul Tharanga and all-rounder Sachithra Senanayake coming in for the injured duo Dimuth Karunaratne and Rangana Herath, with Suranga Lakmal also left out.
